But what about the ADHD Tax?

Hi Beautiful!

It’s tax season here in the US and Canada. Dun, dun, dun… 😱

Unfortunately for my ADHD peeps and I, we pay an ADHD tax on the regular

So, the ADHD tax is an expense you end up paying because of unmanaged ADHD symptoms.

For instance:

💰 Paying more for parking fees because you couldn’t find the ticket when it was time to pay it - ADHD brain: out of sight, out of mind. 🙈

💰 Late fees incurred because you didn’t check your mail in three weeks and didn’t realize you even had an outstanding bill - ADHD brain: sorting mail is super boring. If it isn’t fun, why do it? 🤷‍♀️

💰 Paying for subscriptions you don’t even use because you haven’t checked your online bank account since last summer - ADHD brain: I don’t wanna do it. Don’t make me do it! 😫

So what’s the solution? Creating systems that work for YOU.

This is what I do about mail sorting. Gamify it, Baby!! 🥳

I check the mail every Wednesday. 🗓

As I bring in the mail, I sit at my living room coffee table and set a stopwatch. ⏱

I then immediately tear up any flyers or junk mail into pieces. The physical act of tearing the paper and putting it in a pile to the side makes me feel like I’m vanquishing the Mail Monster. 🦸‍♀️

Then any papers I have to take action on, I put in a file folder. That’s a Saturday project to tackle. More on that process later.

Any papers that I need to keep, go in its own folder.

After sorting my mail, folders go straight into the hanging file folder in my home office so I can refer to them more easily.

Once I finish, I stop the stopwatch. My goal is to beat my mail sorting time each Wednesday.

Just like not everyone with ADHD struggles with the same ADHD symptoms, not every hack is going to work for you.

I encourage you to adopt this mantra: Try differently, not harder.

I hope this helps you reduce some of the ADHD tax you've been paying.

Until next time! 🤗💞

P.S. I’d be happy to jump on a free 30 minute call with anyone to discuss my ADHD journey: how I got diagnosed, what seems to work and doesn't for me, some priceless ADHD hacks that have kept me sane.
